Have you heard the one about the monkey who went to court to sue over copyright infringement? No, it's not a joke. A monkey snapped a selfie that became famous but PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) filed for copyright infringement. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against PETA because copyright laws don't apply to animals. Everyone should have known but the question of why some people believe animals have rights should be more unsettling. Of course, animals should be treated respectfully but they're not the same as people. In order to have human rights you first need to be human. And to be human means to be made in the image of God. This truth is crucial to our dignity and when we forget this we're just monkeying around.
