Commonwealth Policy Center

The scene in Portland Oregon was surreal. Violent protestors were destroying public property. The federal government sent in troops to protect the Federal Justice Center. And Mayor Ted Wheeler spoke through a bullhorn and said “I stand with you.” At the same time, Wheeler was being booed and told to resign. Wheeler called federal actions “flat-out urban warfare and… a threat to our democracy.” He said nothing about protestors resorting to mob behavior. They’re demanding that imprisoned protesters be freed from jail, that the Portland Police be defunded by at least 50 percent and that the city reinvest into the community “especially the Black community,” and that Wheler resign. When elected officials fail to protect private property and keep a community safe, they should resign.
