Educational choice is supported by most Kentuckians but the loudest and most powerful voice opposed to it is the teachers union. Union leaders have convinced many states that school choice and especially charter schools sucks money out of the public school system and could eventually dismantle public education. But a recent study has put a dent in their rhetoric. The Fordham Institute has found that states with charter schools have seen an increase in revenue for school districts and states. Teacher’s unions will continue their fight against charter schools, not because they don’t give children a better education, but because of reasons based on self-interest. This study confirms what we have always known. School choice not only benefits parents and students but the wider community.
