Andrew Walker recently wrote an analysis piece breaking down why so many evangelicals voted for Trump in 2016. He explains it in terms of the progressive push that would trample religious freedom and further protect abortion. Walker says that “religious conservatives might see moral contrasts in black and white, but see voting for a morally compromised figure whose administration pushes back against progressivism as an uncomfortable shade of gray.” Religious conservatives understand that there will not always be political candidates of good character. This is because they understand we live in a fallen world. Walker is right in that political candidates are often deeply flawed. At the same time, a believer must be judicious and steward their democratic privileges. As the 2020 presidential race unfolds, Trump appears the better option for many evangelicals.
