243 years ago, our Founding Fathers crafted America’s first political document called the Declaration of Independence. They outlined the abuses of a tyrannical King who trampled their rights. So they appealed to the “Supreme Judge of the World” and asserted their independence. The Founders relied upon “the laws of nature and of nature’s God” and understood that the Creator must be central to a healthy political and social order. They recognized that our rights come from our Creator, not government. God is part of our political fabric. You might say that He’s interwoven in our political DNA. The genius of the founders is that they recognized the centrality of God in our political compact without establishing a national church. Their idea of ordered liberty—One nation under God—created the possibility of maximum freedom. We’ve been so very blessed ever since. And this is worth celebrating on our nation’s 243rd birthday today.
