Congressional Democrats passed a bill that would make Washington, DC the 51st state. But Republicans voted against it because a constitutional amendment is needed. The reason why the Founding Fathers created Washington DC was to have a neutral seat of power for the federal government. They feared that if the federal government was located within any state, the government would be unduly beholden to the priorities of that state. Congressional Republicans called DC statehood a power grab by Democrats to increase seats in the U.S. Senate. Rep. James Comer (R-Tompkinsville) said “Let’s be clear what H.R. 51 is all about: It’s about Democrats adding two new progressive U.S. senators to push a radical agenda championed by the Squad to reshape America into the socialist utopia they always talk about.”
