The Minneapolis City Council voted to “begin the process of dismantling the Minneapolis Police Department.” Several other big cities are being pressured to dismantle their police force and divert funding to education and other social supports. The anger and frustration over George Floyd’s murder at the hands of a police officer are understandable. But is dismantling the police the answer? Bad cops like Derek Chauvin should be weeded out of the police force and punished. But just because you have some bad actors in the police doesn’t mean you should dismantle an entire police force. Eliminating the police jeopardizes public safety and would likely hurt inner-city communities the most. If you’re wondering what a community looks like without police, check out the videos of violent protests where police were absent. It’s the most compelling reason to keep police forces in place.
