The Kentucky State Senate’s number one bill is to ban sanctuary cities in the Commonwealth. This is in response to some larger cities and states that refuse to work with federal officials to uphold immigration policies. SB 1 requires any Kentucky city or law enforcement agency “to use their best efforts… to support the enforcement of federal immigration law.” It’s a common sense measure that makes clear that the Commonwealth will support federal immigration law and it’s a deterrent to illegal immigration. Sen. Danny Carroll sponsored the bill and said that it would help citizens to report immigration violations. The bill exempts public schools and employees from enforcing the law. With supermajorities of Republicans in the House and Senate, the law is expected to pass. However, it’s unclear whether Gov. Andy Beshear will veto the measure.
