A case before the U.S. Supreme Court gives us some insight into America’s political divide and a hint as to why voters in middle America voted Republican. The city of Philadelphia is suing Catholic Social Services because they refused to place foster children in homes parented by same-sex couples. Philadelphia is known as the city of brotherly love but this case simply reveals an intolerance and animus toward religious groups trying to fulfill their mission according to their religious beliefs. Some of the justices seemed to agree. Religious freedom is a cornerstone of our Republic, and so is moral order. Philadelphia’s policy that elevates LGBT identity above religious freedom both hurts religious groups that perform a public good and the children they’re trying to help.
