Statues of historical figures are being torn down and vandalized across our nation. At first, it was confederate generals in public places. But vandals have moved on and are defacing and toppling statues of historical figures who shaped our nation—figures that have nothing to do with the confederacy. In Boston, a statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded, In Portland, Oregon a statue of George Washington was vandalized and torn down. In Philadelphia, another statue of Washington and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution were defaced. In San Francisco vandals toppled a statue of General U.S. Grant whose leadership in the Civil War ended the scourge of slavery. Tearing down statues of Americans who shaped our history does violence to our civil order and whitewashes our history.
