Director, Commonwealth Policy Center

If you're a college student and planning to attend the University of Kentucky this year, be ready to dig a little deeper into your pocket to pay the bill. Tuition is increasing by 2.5 percent bringing annual tuition to $12,000 a year. This doesn't include room and board either. Tuition at UK has increased over 100 percent since 2005. The runaway increases are making college unaffordable. UK has a $3.9 billion budget. Much is spent on buildings and high administrative costs like UK president's salary of $790,000 per year.  Coach Cal's base salary is $8 million. While we want top notch leaders, coaches and professors at the University of Kentucky the students are bearing much of the cost and the Commonwealth is paying a high price by making public education less affordable.
